Let me get this out in the open - I’m a newbie, first mining rig, i know i didn’t get the most optimal graphics card, but have waited weeks and haven’t found any of the recommended ones i’ve read about on this forum.

I have the XFX Double D FX797GTDFC Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB. They were pricey for what they are, but it’s all that was in stock anywhere. It has some “DOUBLE DISSIPATION EDITION” sticker on it and it does seem to run cool if only one is installed.

Out of the box with 1 card installed it’d do 540Kh/s at about 62C. When i added the other 3 to the board the temps were like: 82C,98C,67C,98C. They’re so thick that airflow in for the middle cards is terrible. Currently i’m running 3 of them instead of 4 until my PCI risers get here (China shipping… ugh)

I’m using the latest Catylst drivers (13.9) and MSI afterburner for fan arc control, and CGminer 3.7.2 (for the scrypt!)

So obviously, after looking at hardware comparison charts i’m expecting to get 700Kh/s+ out of the box. After 8 hours of fiddling with it and doing research i learned a few things:

      1. These cards appear to be voltage locked. I changed the voltage to 1.15 via CGminer, it said the hardware accepted it, but when i checked again it hadn’t changed. Also in MSI afterburner it won’t display or let me modify the voltage control. It’s probably not worth the effort of trying to mess with this (for me anyway)
      2. If i set the intensity over 13, there are numerous hardware errors, although the Kh/s goes up to almost 800, but the heat output/HW errors goes up too.
      3. 2 of these cards spaced well apart would be ideal for 1 motherboard, if not using risers

So after playing around i found that these CGminer settings worked well enough for me to stop messing with them, but i would appreciate any input to get the Kh/s higher without HW errors.
      >setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
      >setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
      >cgminer.exe --scrypt -o HOSTNAME:PORT -u USER -p PASS --intensity 13 -g 2 --shaders 2048 --thread-concurrency 8192 --gpu-engine 995 --gpu-memclock 1600

I also moved my rig to the garage where it’s about 50 degrees :P

Not quite sure how to add attachements to this forum, so here’s an imgur link to a screenshot:

With my XFX this did the trick to get well over 700kh/s:

        1750 memclock
        1050 coreclock

        intensity 13
        thread-concurrency 8192
        gpu-threads 2

do note i’m watercooled so heat is not an issue.

Hmm, that’s a great idea. I’ve never dabbled in water cooling before though. Any suggestions for a setup/brand?

Ahh that worked! I changed memclock to 1750, there was a very small change to Kh/s, maybe 4 or so.

Then i changed the coreclock to 1050, and it went from 686Kh/s -> 732Kh/s and only raised the temp 1C. Fantastic! thank you!

I sent you some FTC for the info, you’re my very first transaction! I’d send more but i don’t have much in my wallet, literally just got started yesterday.

Can’t thank you enough for the info though. I was a bit worried to change any more settings just getting it to 686Kh/s - but the coreclock change had quite the effect.

Did you set the memclock and coreclock in cgminer or something else?

It’s usually done in cgminer although you can use MSI’s afterburner to overclock the cards a well.
